SIMPLY/THICK FOR INFANTS

photolibrary_rf_photo_of_baby_being_fed_with_bottleThe FDA recently recalled SimplyThick, a thickening agent used to help premature infants with swallowing disorders. It was discovered on May 13, 2011, after 15 reported infant deaths related to this product, that SimplyThick could cause necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), if used on infants born before 37 weeks.
NEC is characterized by inflammation and death of intestinal tissue, which can lead to premature death.
SimplyThick was often mixed with formula or breast milk. It was sold in most pharmacies and distributors in the United States. Distributors should stop selling this product immediately and parents/guardians should stop using this product.
